Press Photo Dancer Jeanmaire & co-star in "Hans Christian Andersen" - pio38159

Jeanmaire (Dancer). The spirit of Hans Christian Andersen's beloved childhood tales, rather than his life story, provides the basis of Samuel Goldwyn's $4,000,000 Technicolor production of "Hans Christian Andersen," starring Danny Kaye, Farley Granger and Jeanmaire. In a fantasy ballet, Danny Kaye dreams that he is saving Jeanmaire from the clutches of her husband, Farley Granger, and here he bursts into the dungeon where she is kept and surprises them.

1953 Press Photo Farley Granger as ballet director in "Hans Christian Andersen"

Tall, dark and handsome Farley Granger plays one of his best roles of his fast-moving career as the Continental Ballet Director and husband of the beautiful ballerina. The popular young star was chosen personally by Goldwyn from an imposing list of candidates because he felt that Farley, whom he had first discovered in a high school play, was ready for his first big, important part. Farley's role is the most difficult he has ever tackled. It calls for him to strut and storm, to "blow up" in sudden, but violent bursts of temperament, and yet to make love to his wife warmly and tenderly. The role is Farley's fourteenth since making his debut in 1943. Most of his pictures, notably "Our Very Own," "Enchantment" and "I Want You," have been under the Goldwyn banner. But he is the most eagerly-sought star for loan-outs in Hollywood. Just before reporting to the studio for "Hans Christian Andersen" Granger made "The Full House," co-starring Jeanne Crain, at 20th Century-Fox. Immediately after finishing his assignment, he went to MGM to play opposite Jane Powell in "Small Town Girl."
