1963 Press Photo Wingless M 2 Aircraft Test Flight, Pilot Milton O. Thompson
This is an original press photo. Credit - UPI and NEA Edwards Air Force Base, California - With the markings of the landing strip at Edwards Air Force Base beneath him, NASA research pilot Milton O. Thompson maneuvers the new wingless M-2 re-entry craft. During the experimental test flight, the M-2 was lifted to 13,000 feet by a transport plane and then cut loose to plummet to earth at 4,000 feet a second until the pilot pulled up the nose of the wingless craft in a "flare-out," reducing its speed to about 80 miles an hour, for a gentle landing on its three wheels. The small aircraft, 13-by-20 feet, is one of several being tested by NASA for re-entry vehicles which could be used to ferry men back to earth from orbiting space stations. It is wingless in order to reduce air friction during re-entry, but its shape and twin tail fins permit it to be maneuvered in a glide 1,000 miles laterally to a suitable landing spot.Photo measures 9 x 7inches. Photo is dated 09-24-1963.

(born February 15, 1947) is Soviet defector and aerospace engineer and lecturer. Belenko was sentenced to death in the Soviet Union for state treason. He was born in Nalchik, Russian SFSR in a Ukrainian family. Lieutenant Belenko was a pilot with the 513th Fighter Regiment, 11th Air Army, Soviet Air Defence Forces based in Chuguyevka, Primorsky Krai. His name became known worldwide on September 6, 1976, when he successfully defected to the West, flying his Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-25 "Foxbat" jet fighter to Hakodate, Japan. This was the first time that Western experts were able to get a close look at the aircraft, and it revealed many secrets and surprises. His defection caused a lot of damage to the Soviet Union Air Force. Belenko was granted asylum by U.S. President Gerald Ford, and a trust fund was set up for him, granting him a very comfortable living in later years. The U.S. Government interrogated and debriefed him for five months after his defection, and employed him as a consultant for several years thereafter. (Wikipedia)Photo measures 11 x 8.5inches.
