1967 Press Photo The praying mantis preparing to catch a black widow spider

This is an original press photo. The praying mantis, which is harmless to man, will catch the black widow spider and feed upon it by clasping the spider in upheld forelimbs as if in prayer. Louisiana beckoned to me, years ago, in the strangest way. I was a reporter in the New York area. Prohibition was the law of the land, and bootleg whiskey flowed on the second floor, our art department. A cartoonist spotted me coming in one night and called to me excitedly, waving a bottle of whiskey, "Come here, quick. This damn stuff has got me. I see "walking dirt." I hurried to his deck and peered over his shoulder. Black lines of India ink crisscrossed his half-finished sketch, and a bundle of sticks, some three inches long smeared in ink, crawled across it- a bag worm. I had read about the bag worm, so I picked up the walking dirt and placed it in an empty paint box on the table. The cartoonist, chuckling with relief, pulled out a fresh sheet of drawing paper from a cardboard tube that bore a New Orleans label. Photo measures 10 x 8.25 inches. Photo is dated 01-1-1967.
