This is an original press photo. Moscow, U.S.S.R.: Surrounded by plastic reproductions which he made from actual skulls, both prehistoric and recent. Soviet scientist Mikhail Gerasimov works on the second issue of his anthropological atlas. Busts of ancient men like the Neanderthal man (at left) help with illustrations for the book, which traces the development of humans from the lower Paleolithic (Old Stone Age) to the tenth century, A.D., in Europe, Asia and Africa.Photo measures 9.25 x 7.25 inches. The caveman, long regarded as a low-browed brute who bashed women with a club, now is pictured as artistic, religious, inventive and kind to the elderly. Photo measures 8.25 x 10 inches. 1972 Press Photo Dr Edmund Crelin Jr Looks Over Skull Models of Neanderthal Man

This is an original press photo. Dr. Edmund S. Crelin, Jr., of Yale University looks over skull models which helped lead him to the conclusion that Neanderthal man was only a distant cousin of modern man. In the foreground is Rhodesian man, a form of Neanderthal who apparently developed the physical ability to make speech sounds before he could think. Crelin holds Mr. Carmel man in right hand - a contemporary of Neanderthal who, unlke Neanderthals, could speak. In the other hand he holds steinheim man, who lived long before Neanderthal man, but had the physical equipment for speech. Partially obscured skull below Crelin's left hand is Cro-Magnon Man, who Crelin says, used his ability to speak to over Neanderthal man. Photo measures 7 x 10.75 inches. Photo is dated 3-2-1972.
