This is an original press photo. There will be two distinct audiences for "The Lord of the Rings": those who have read J.R. Tolkien's trilogy, and those who have not. This might be said of any movie that has as its source a book, but few literary works have such a devout following as "The Lord of the Rings." Those who fall into this category will inevitably view the new $8 million animated version in a different (and perhaps more critical) light than those uninitiated in Tolkienism. Falling into the latter category, I cannot speak of the feature's faithfulness to its source, though director Ralph Bakshi has obviously treated the material with respect. But is it possible that his quest for faithfulness Bakshi was too reluctant to make changes in the material, changes that would have made the film more entertaining and understandable? This is an original press photo. It is hardly unusual for reviews of a new movie to vary greatly. Someone is almost certain to love every new movie, and someone else is certain to hate it. It is not even unusual for the same movie to turn up on different critics' "10 best" and "10 worst" lists for the same year. Eventually, though, a sort of rough consensus of opinion will form (very often "ratified" by box-office figures), and then those who were out of step with it at first will either jump aboard or spend the next few years writing about the movie as either 'underrated" or "overrated." Photo measures 10 x 8.25 inches. Photo is dated 12-25-1978.
