Los Angeles, Calif.........The X-15, which will fly man higher and
faster than he's ever been, will actually glow red like a blacksmith's
forge as it plunges back into the earth's blanket of air. Built of new
stainless steel alloys to combat these high temperature conditions, the
research vehicle is now being assembled at North American Aviation's Los
Angeles plant. It is expected to make its first flight from Edwards Air
Force base next year as a joint project of the air force, navy and
national advisory committee for aeronautics. North American chief
engineer Harrison Storms said the speed of the X-15, which will fly an
estimated 100-miles high, will be better than one-mile a second. In
photo left, half of the X-15's pressure vessel is checked for flaws in
the x-ray laboratory by Dave Johns and Glen Boyce. In photo center, men
work of the seam welded spherical fuel tank of the X-15. In photo right,
