This is an original press photo. Stanley Kubrick has been quoted to the effect that if a movie project is provocative enough to keep "him" interested in it for two or three years, he's willing to gamble that it'll be interesting enough to hold other folks' attention for two or three hours. With "The Shining," however, Kubrick may have lost the gamble. The film comes from the man who gave us such stellar social commentary as "Lolita" and such savage political satire as "Dr. Strangelove" before moving on to the presumably headier attractions of science fiction ("2001: A Space Odyssey"), futuristic speculation (A Clockwork Orange") and even period "art" films ("Barry Lyndon"). Shelley Duvall does emerge from the picture with dignity intact--unlike Jack Nicholson, who nearly sinks the whole project with a spectacularly wrongheaded performance Photo measures 9.75 x 8 inches.
