1966 Press Photo NASA's HL-10 Lifting Body from Northrop Corp, CA - hcm00307

This is an original press photo. Edwards Air Force Base, California - The National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) Flight Research Center today accepted delivery of the HL-10 Lifting Body from the Northrop Corporation, Hawthorne, California. The HL-1o is the second lifting body vehicle to be used for flight testing by NASA to study the terminal low speed characteristics of possible future space vehicles returning to earth. The first heavyweight lifting body, the M-2, was also built by Norair and is expected to make its first flight in the near future. Lifting Body vehicles are wingless and achieve aero-dynamic lift from their shape. Theoretical and wind tunnel studies indicate that lifting bodies would be capable of maneuvering in space and landing on earth under pilot control. The HL-10 and the M-2 will be air launched from B-52 aircraft flying at 45,000 feet and 500 files per hour. Powerless, they will make a 300 MPH glide to a landing. The HL-10 will be tested in a wind tunnel at NASA's Ames Research Center before making its flight. Airplanes.Photo measures 7.75 x 10.25inches. Photo is dated 01-18-1966.
