1974 Press Photo Marine Corps Hawker Harrier to perform in New Orleans air show.
This is an original press photo. Probably the most unusual aircraft to perform at the Open House and Air Show at Naval Air Station New Orleans on November 2 and 3, will be the U.S. Marine Corps Hawker Harrier. The Harrier is one of the world's most advanced aircraft. It is built by Hawker-Siddeley, a British firm, and has been adopted by the Marines as a strike and reconnaissance aircraft. This jet needs no airport as it is capable of vertical takeoff and landing. In flight, the Harrier can hover motionless at any height, rotate on its axis while hovering or change to forward flight and quickly accelerate to a speed upwards of 600 miles per hour. The Harrier will be demonstrated in flight and will also be on display along with many other aircraft. Photo measures 9.75 x 8.25 inches. Photo is dated 10-16-1974.
